description | This research is aimed to prove that auxiliary emerges in all sentences. It is, then, interpreted to the objectives; to identify the auxiliary from the data and to explain its transformational process. To reach those objectives, it is needed to implement the theory of Transformational Grammar. It is believed that this theory is the only relevant theory since it is the only theory which breaks down sentence into deep structure and surface structure.
The method of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The object is auxiliary viewed from transformational grammar. The auxiliary attaches to the main verb of the sentence. The data are sentences containing auxiliary taken from the printed material. The printed material used as the data source is the main article of The Jakarta Post, an English daily newspaper.
Based on data analysis, there are ten types of auxiliary and three transformational process of auxiliary. Those ten types are (1) Tense, (2) Do + Base, (3) Modal Aux + Base, (4) Be + Pres Partc, (5) Be + Past Partc, (6) Have + Past Partc, (7) Mn Aux + Sup Aux + Base, (8) Mn Aux + Sup Aux + Pres Partc, (9) Mn Aux + Sup Aux + Past Partc, (10) Mn Aux + Sup Aux + C. Those three transformational processes are (1) tense, (2) have, and (3) be. The result of the analysis shows that auxiliary emerges in all sentences.
