Summary:This research studies the English sport register in sport column of Kompas. The objectives of this study are to find out the forms and meanings of English sport register used in sport column of Kompas based on its classification. The writer uses the descriptive qualitative research which the data in the forms of written and oral words are descriptively analyzed. The data are all the words and phrases which are taken from Kompas in February 2009 which are classified as registers. The methods of collecting data are document and observation while the techniques for analyzing data are comparing method by reading, selecting, and classifying the English registers used in sport column of Kompas. The result of this research show that there are two forms of register, namely word and phrase. From 54 data found by the researcher, 50 data or 92.6% belong to word, namely 15 data or 27.7% belong to the form of word; there are noun (13 data or 23.21%) and adjective (2 data or 3.7%), and 35 data or 64.83% belong to the formation of word; there are compound (18 data or 33.33%), abbreviation (11 data or 20.4%), blending (1 data or 1.85%), clipping (1 data or 1.85%), and coining (4 data or 7.4%). The next analysis found that from 68 data, 4 data or 7.4% belong to the form of noun phrase. Through comparison between lexical and contextual meaning of each English register, it is also presented six different meaning of each English register and its percentage. They are: the real meaning of the word could be broader than the new meaning (2.38%), the new meaning of the word could be broader than its real meaning (2.38%), The real meaning and the new meaning of the word can share some features of meaning whereas such as them has different meaning (2.38%), the real meaning and the new meaning of the word could be identical to each other but used in different field (4.76%), the real meaning and the new meaning of the word could be quite different (23.8%), and the new meaning does not have the real meaning (64.3%).
